An update

This is the launch of Action Virginia Alerts - our weekly e-newsletter and Action Alerts where we'll keep you up-to-date on what's taking place in Richmond and on the ground in your community. Our goal is to keep you informed so that the actions you take will make a difference!

Last Sunday we launched our efforts with a tele-town hall on Parental Choice Educational Savings Accounts. Over 800 people conferenced in to hear from Delegate Dave LaRock and Heritage Action on the status of PCESA. It was an incredible evening!

Also, below you'll find an update on our three legislative priorities. So much has happened so fast - all good stuff, but it's happening fast!

 1. Medicaid Expansion/Healthcare Reform:

This week several of our "oppose" bills identified in our tracking list were killed. However, two of the "oppose" bills which create state healthcare exchanges, remained alive in the Senate. The good news is that both of our primary "support" bills passed through House sub-committees and are on their way to the floor for a vote next week.

 2. Parental Choice Education Savings Accounts (HB2238):

Monday was an interesting day for HB2238, which creates Education Savings Accounts for special needs children. The sausage making got messy, but in the end we were able to get almost all of it back in the casing. The PCESA legislation is on its way to Appropriations - we need to put pressure on them to support this legislation. Please call and e-mail those members of Appropriations to let them know that you support HB2238!

3. Convention of States:

There's been a lot of misinformation floating around out there and we're hoping to set the record straight. The first is Michael Farris' point-by-point response to an "urgent appeal" by Senator Dick Black. The second is a white paper that Dr. Rita Dunway from COS wrote which sets forth the hard evidence rebutting the unsubstantiated claimed made by Article V naysayers. And the third is a shorter document that gives very concise answers to some of the most common questions.

Additionally, the COS Resolutions had a stellar week with both SJ269 and HJ497 getting strong support in the Rules Committee in both the Senate and House. Thanks to our patrons and co-patrons for their incredible commitment to Keeping the Republic (KTR). Both resolutions will be on the floor in their respective chambers near the middle of next week.

Once the dust settles next week, we will be sending out some Action Virginia Alerts...stay tuned and enjoy the rest of your weekend!
